A Big Huge Post On LOST

Okay, there’s so much to throw in here… this is going to be a huge post, so get ready.

Lost logo

Let’s start with the big one.

Blast Door Map

First, fans are crazy and have analyzed and over analyzed and triple analyzed the map and come up with several enhanced, translated, and decoded versions of the map as seen below (click any map to zoom in or right-click and “Save Target As...” to save the image to your computer):

Blast Door 1

Blast Door 2

Blast Door 3

Wow, now that’s kind of a lot to process. Some of that is a little hard to read so here’s one more map, fan-made and cleans up a lot of the text so it’s easier to read:

Blast Door 4

Not sure where to even start with this!  That’s just grab out some of the big things that stand out on this one. There are a lot of notes with words like possible, confirmed, highly unlikely, suspected, and unknown which makes it sound like someone in the hatch further along in the discovery process on the island taking notes of all that they had seen. For some reason they felt the need to hide these notes very carefully with the invisible black-light ink and on the hatch door that I suspect only comes down every 6 months (Desmond mentioned new supplies showing up every 6 months, I think the hatch doors closing and the supply pallet showing up at the same time is no accident).

Some other random things I grabbed from this:

  • There are 6 distinct hatches (with a 7th hatch scribbled out). This confirms the long-held suspicion that there was a hatch for all of the ‘studies’ referenced in the Dharma/Hanso video and that they were all on the island.
  • 2 of the hatches appear to be underground (hence the dotted lines).
  • There are several references to a ‘weather project’ and ‘climate control’ which coincides with the seemingly sporadic dumping rain.
  • The square root of 16, 63, and 225 (4, 8, 15) which adds another dimension to the numbers.
  • Some intriguing test that references to Danielle Rousseau’s account of her team getting sick - “the disease worsens with the treatment/the treatment is worse than the disease”

And here are some other speculations from around the web:

  • “cerebrus-related activity” probably refers to the Monster. Cerebrus, as everyone knows, was the three-headed dog that guarded the gates of Hell. The Monster appparently patrols the island and has the ability to look into people’s souls and see their traumatic past-life events. some (like Eko and Locke) are left unharmed, and others (like the pilot) are destroyed.
  • I’m guessing that the “Dharma Intranet” refers to the messaging system that Michael was using to communicate with Walt/Not-Walt. Remember the film splice that Eko found in the Bible in Arrow Station? The one that emphasized not using the computer for anything besides entering the numbers? Most likely, using it to chat with others via the “Dharma Intranet” was one of those other uses, and may have caused an “incident” in the past
  • Bottom of blast door map: P.R.D.: every 6 to 8 months. Paracute Resupply Drop.
  • If those numbers ARE roman numerals, then CVIII = 108.
  • “Confirmed site of “Caduceus” Medical Station. Another Greek reference - caduceus or magic wand of the Greek god Hermes, messenger of the gods, inventor of magical incantations, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves. Well we have plenty of those on the island right?
  • you can see that on the bottom of the map, it says “Home(?) of H.G. Delegation Inspection of 12.07.81” - i think that means that the real Henry Gale (HG) was a Dharma Inspector and something went terribly wrong and he was killed. That also means that our “new” Henry Gale has been on the island for quite some time and now has assumed the identity.

Here’s another image that points out a few interesting thing about the map:

Blast Door 5

Secret History
“The Staff” is where Claire was held captive by the Others. “Cerberus” - the mythic watchdog of hell - is probably Smokey the Monster. “AH” could be Dharma financier Alvar Hanso. But who is “MDG”? And if Dharma abandoned this hatch in ‘85, does that mean the Others aren’t affiliated with them?

Cartography Queries
Burning questions: Who was this map-maker? Where is he now? What’s up with the math equations and French phrases? How can we be sure the Map isn’t some Dharma mind game? How much of the map can Locke remember - and what will he do for a chance to see it again?

Hatchapalooza!
Presumably other (undiscovered) hatches. The dashed icons - like the hub marked “?” - might mean the mapmaker wasn’t sure these places existed. A notation near “C3” suggest underground tunnels. The “CV” rectangles could denote electromagnetic energy or viewing stations.

Who Is Magnus?
Everyone remembers that the “Black Rock” is the slave ship beached in the jungle. Magnus Hanso must be linked to Alvar - but how? Hypothesis: “Magnus” might be a veiled reference to The Magus, a 1965 novel about a man on an island who gets sucked into the mind-bending “godgame” of a mysterious recluse.

Weird Science
Sounds Dr. Moreau-ish - especially when you realize that Ursus moritimus means “polar bear.” Still, this notation does undermine the theory that the island polar bear was conjured from a comic book. Nonetheless, was Dharma experimenting with animal adaptability? If so, why?

It should be real interesting to see what they do with all this in the coming episodes!

Henry Gale

Okay, so he spends the entire episode convincing Locke (and the viewers) that he actually is who he says he is, meanwhile Sayid, Charlie, and that annoying girl are find the other vital elements of his to be true with the grave and the ballon, right where he said.

But what, what did we find in the grave but… the real Henry Gale!  Someone’s got some ‘splainin to do!

Henry Gale's License

The license confirms that the actual Henry Gale was actually from Minnesota, but no word on whether he had a wife on the balloon, if he was alone on the balloon, or if he even travelled by the balloon - maybe it was a setup by fake Henry.

Also, the license expired 06-11-2003 and since I believe the show timeline is right around late 2004 right now, this means that he’s probably been on the island for at least a year or two (dead or alive?) as it’s highly unlikely he just happened to be carrying around an expired license.

Alright that’s the end for now, if you’re hungry for some more there are plenty of websites out there just loaded with info.

Did you happen to read this article? http://www.ew.com/ew/article/commentary/0,6115,1178179_3_0_,00.html It blew me away…

Last night’s episode was AWESOME. I am so confused now!

Wow, good article thanks!

A theory running in my circle at work is that everyone on the island is in a mental institution, not just one person (Hurley). This could help explain how everyone is so eternally connected (because they’re subconciously creating the connections, ala the movie Identity) and the continual appearance of the numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) and other phenomena. Also explains the only argument that Libby had against Hurley still being in the mental ward, that she had different things happening to her that wasn’t in Hurley’s mind.

I have never seen even one episode of LOST but the hype is incredible.  I’m making a point of watching it next season.  I have the feeling, however, that unless I get the previous season(s) on DVD and catch myself up I’ll never be able to truly get into it.

Ben - yah it is definitely a show where you’re going to need to watch all the old episodes before you jump into the new stuff.  But don’t worry...it’s been my experience that once you’ve either purcahsed or borrowed a season on DVD… it doesn’t take more than a few days to finish thanks to the ‘gotta see just one more!’ factor. =)

he’s probably been on the island for at least a year or two (dead or alive?)

Dead, considering Sayid dug up the grave finding the real Henry and his ID.

Sam - well yah, now he is. =)

I was more referring to the question of whether he was DOA (Dead On Arrival) or if he lived on the island for a year or so before having died (or been murdered).
